The Artist’s Way – Reignite Your Creativity

The Artist’s Way by Julia Cameron is a non-therapy self-therapy book. Made with creatives in mind, beneficial to everyone looking to reignite the creativity within.

The Discovery

I came across this unique and curious book sometime towards the end of 2020. For many years I ran a very successful arts and crafts handmade business. I remember the passion and the constant flow of creativity going through me that sometimes even kept me awake late at night. It was magical.

Fast forward 10 years I started feeling dry and uninspired. I was still creating but the fun wasn’t there anymore. It felt as if the pipeline was blocked and the creative flow couldn’t get through. I am sure this happens to everyone passionate about their work, not just to creatives.

One day I was reading an article on a creative blog. The author talked about creative blockage and mentioned the book as one of the solutions. The book was not new. It was first published in 1992 and since then over 4 million copies of the book have been sold. So, I thought I would give it a try.

The Effect

The book had a profound effect on me. It took me on a self-actualization journey. It revealed to me a lot about why I am who I am.

At the time of starting to work through the book, I was already studying about the human mind. The book made it even more clear to me how fascinating the connection between our past and present is and how this connection shapes us into who we will be in the future.

The intention of the book is to unlock the reader’s creativity. It did unlock mine but in an unexpected way. I discovered my passion for writing and researching the human mind and its motives. You are visiting this blog and reading this article because of this discovery.

What You Will Find Inside

The Artist’s Way is written with creatives in mind, but it can benefit everyone who wants to go through self-exploration to achieve self-discovery.

The book is a 3-month long journey. It is divided into 12 weekly chapters. Each chapter gives you the topic framework for the 7 days ahead and provides a list of tasks to complete during this period. You have to do journaling as well as go once a week on an artist’s date by yourself. All these small tasks are connected and work together.

There is no doubt that creativity is the most important human resource of all. Without creativity, there would be no progress, and we would be forever repeating the same patterns.
— Edward de Bono

The book is not a religious book, even though Julia Cameron states in the introduction that she used the word, God, in the book, because she believed the Creator gave us creativity. The reader could replace the word God with the word flow or good orderly direction. She never mentions any religion or faith system in the book.

The Journey Ahead

Grab The Artist’s Way if you are looking to refresh your creative flow (whatever your line of work is). Who knows where it will lead you.

Perhaps you will write the next best-seller book or an Oscar-winning movie script. Maybe your paintings will be featured at the Guggenheim Museum in NY. As it may be you will take part in the Royal Variety Performance. Explore the possibilities!
