The Midlife Awakening: Rediscover Your True Self Now
โI think what you do is absolutely amazing! Because, like you say, this stage in life (mid-life) is always looked at so negatively, so many people are scared of it and uncomfortable about it, but itโs literally the perfect time to reinvent yourself and go explore; you have money and no responsibilities ๐ I recently got my mum to do this for herself, and Iโm so happy to see her blossom.
For a while, she was just feeling sorry for herself (as an empty nester divorcee), just observing herself โgetting olderโ, feeling sorry for herself, and just existing instead of living. So, I did my best to get her inspired every time we spoke and make her understand that this is actually the best time of her life when she can literally do anything she wants; she can spend her money any way she wants because no one depends on her.
So she started experimenting, first, she went to an art class, then started a new sport, then a solo trip to Cyprus, and now sheโs a completely new woman! ๐ Sheโs full of joy and excitement, she goes on trips and retreats almost every month, and sheโs also so much nicer to talk to and be around, so our relationship is so much better too!โ
. . .
So I honor you so deeply for doing this work with so many people and enhancing so many peopleโs lives and their family membersโ lives too! ๐โ
In a conversation with Kitti, a LinkedIn friend, I received this reply with regard to the work I do. Nice, no?
I felt appreciated, but more so, I felt happy about her mom. My heart was screaming, โYES!โ
Then, I started feeling anxious about the other midlifers that donโt do anything to change.
So many are not happy with where they are in life. Consciously or not, they choose to stay unhappy. They choose to wait, hoping things will get better, somehow, observing themselves โgetting older.โ
Over time, unhappiness becomes the default. They lose hope that things may get better.
The colors of life become tinted and lose vibrancy.
The things that used to make them happy feel uninspiring and bland. They feel they are running a hamster wheel with no prospect of stopping until the day they die.
. . .
Kittiโs mom was โfeeling sorry for herself and just existing instead of living.โ
If you think you canโt do anything, think again. You can under one condition.
DO SOMETHING ABOUT IT!
I did. Kittiโs mom did. Iโve seen my clients do it.
None of us were special in any way. Each of us came from different walks of life. We struggled with different problems.
The only thing we all had in common was the decision to do something about our lives to change the narrative.
Once we made the decision, we went through a cycle that more or less looked like this:
Want to do something โ Scared to do something โ Deciding to do something about it โ Take one small step โ See it is doableโ Take another step โ Keep moving โ Life starts changing for the better โ Life becomes better โ We think we should have done is sooner.
. . .
I realize how unpolished and not politically correct this post is.
I am not going to โstylize it.โ I will post it the way my thoughts came out (grammar police, read no further.)
It hurts me to see crushed, capable, experienced, and full of potential midlife men and women living with the notion that their lives are over and they can do nothing about it, feeling sorry for themselves.
What I am going to say next is different from what, as a coach, I am trained to do, but I will do it anyway. I will say it as a midlifer to a midlife.
STOP EXISTING!
DO SOMETHING!
Some of you may think this is yet another marketing gimmick.
Making a living out of something you love is fantastic. But today, I donโt care about the money.
I want to see my tribe change their life trajectories. I want to see smiles on their midlife faces. Life is not over! The best is yet to come if you give it a chance! (hey, I am known as the annoying optimist for a reason)
Even if I donโt hear from you, please promise to do something about your life. Not for me, for you!
