The Relationships That Survive Retirement

The Relationships That Survive Retirement
Workshop 5

A 90-minute virtual workshop on the social infrastructure that makes retirement genuinely good.

Social isolation is one of the strongest predictors of poor outcomes in retirement. Stronger than smoking. Stronger than physical inactivity. The research on this is consistent and significant.

And yet almost nobody prepares for it.

Here is why it happens. For most working professionals, the social network feels rich – full of colleagues, collaborators, professional contacts, lunch companions, and team members. It feels like a real and resilient community.

Then retirement arrives. And most of that network, it turns out, was work-dependent. It did not belong to you. It belonged to your job.

The people who navigate this well are not necessarily more likable or more socially skilled. They are the ones who saw it coming and built something before they needed it. This workshop is where that building starts.

WHAT YOU WILL DO

Loneliness in retirement is not inevitable. It is the result of preparation that stopped at the financial level. This workshop takes it further.

THE SOCIAL NETWORK MAP

You will map your current social network and tag each connection: work-dependent, personal, or community-rooted. For most people, the result is confronting – 60 to 70 percent of connections disappear at retirement. Seeing it on paper is the first step to doing something about it.

THE 5 CIRCLES OF COMMUNITY

Using the 5 Circles of Community framework, you will assess where your post-retirement social infrastructure is strong, where it is thin, and where it does not yet exist. This is the map that guides the building work.

THE CONNECTION DESIGN

You will leave with three specific actions: one relationship to invest in, one to rebuild, and one to initiate. Not vague intentions – real, named, specific next steps.

WHO THIS IS FOR

This workshop is for you if you are a Gen Xer between 45 and 65 who:

  • Suspects your social life is more work-dependent than you would like to admit
  • Has noticed friendships thinning out and has not yet done anything about it
  • Wants to build a post-retirement social life deliberately rather than hoping it sorts itself out
  • Understands that connection is not a soft extra – it is a health outcome

This workshop works for individuals and for couples – the relationship mapping exercise surfaces dynamics that are useful whether you are navigating retirement solo or with a partner.

FAQ

What platform is the workshop on?

Zoom. You will receive the link in your confirmation email. No account required – just click to join.

Do I need any special materials?

Just pen and paper, and ideally your printed workbook. We will send the workbook PDF with your confirmation email.

What if I miss a workshop I have paid for?

The 48-hour replay is available to all registered participants and is sent within an hour of the live session closing. If you purchased series access, your replay entitlement carries to every workshop in the series.

Do I have to attend all five workshops?

No. Each workshop is a standalone session. You can register for one or all five. That said, the five dimensions are interconnected – the full series produces a more complete picture than any single workshop on its own.

Is this a sales pitch for a bigger program?

No. The workshop is a standalone session with real, practical value regardless of what you do next. There is a brief, honest mention of the Gen X Retirement Protocol at the close – because it is the natural next step for people who want to go deeper – but there is no pressure and no pitch.
